Telcos tap into Machine-to-Machine communications services

Intent on boosting revenue growth potential, telecommunication companies are tapping into Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications services, according to Yiru Zhong, Frost & Sullivan Analyst for ICT in Europe.

"It has been a year since the flurry of Tier 1 M2M market entries were announced. In early 2009, Orange announced that it had acquired Mobile and Data as part of its M2M capabilities. In April, T-mobile revealed plans for smart metering services with Echelon, and in July, Vodafone unveiled its global M2M platform," says Yiru Zhong.

"Vodafone has revealed that, as of May 2010, they have installed 1m M2M devices in the UK. As so many Telcos have entered the fray over the course of the year, providing M2M services with different approaches and target markets, we believe there are enough examples to support analysis of some trends in the Telco approach towards enabling M2M operations."
