BBC gets mobile TV green light

Despite criticism about its potential dominance of mobile as well as online, the BBC Trust has found that the corporation can continue with its mobile video strategy outlined in February 2010.

The plans were revealed in a keynote at Mobile World congress by Director of BBC Future Media & Technology Erik Huggers who revealed that the BBC was to launch two mobile apps covering news and sport. Yet as reported in C2M on 19 July 2010, the corporation had delayed mobile video development for fear of not being seen as delivering value for licence fee payers money.

A noticeably happy Huggers commented " We are continuing with the launch of apps that we outlined in February .We know that increasing numbers of you want to access BBC output on-the-go and the rapid growth of internet-connected mobiles and smartphones in the market means we can cost-effectively provide our content and services on these devices, and this is a really important way for us to deliver online services in the future...we begin with our News App becoming available for the Apple iPhone, and soon it will come to Blackberry and Android phones in addition to other devices later in the year."

The news app includes the BBC's top Stories, UK and International news, Business, Politics, Health, Education, Science and Environment, Technology and Entertainment stories as well as Features and Analysis from correspondents around the world. Users can scroll sideways through each news category or up and down the page to access more BBC news sections. To refresh the stories in the app, users pull down on the interface with their thumb to load the latest news.

A personalisation feature lets viewers re-order news categories to suit their needs. An edit button, top right, reveals a customisation screen where viewers can add favourite news sections by clicking on an icon and then dragging and dropping each news category into the order of users' choice.
